Standard Test

EQIAS tests for a broad range of banned substances using urine, blood, and hair. The most common banned substances in animal sports include:

  • ANABOLIC ANDRONGENIC STEROIDS — used to build lean muscle and reduce recovery time in athletes, potentially increasing strength, speed and endurance. Examples include testosterone and related compounds, nandrolone and stanozolol.
  • NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS (NSAID) — used to relieve pain and inflammation and help reduce recovery time, potentially increasing strength, speed and endurance. Examples include ibuprofen and diclofenac.
  • STIMULANTS — these agents are generally used to increase alertness and decrease reaction time. Examples include ephedrine, amphetamine and modafinil.
  • DIURETICS AND MASKING AGENTS — used to increase urine production, helping thwart detection of other drugs. Examples include bumetanide, chlorothiazide and metolazone.
  • HORMONES AND RELATED SUBSTANCES — peptide hormones have a variety of effects. Erythropoietin (EPO) and related substances enhance oxygen carrying capacity by increasing red blood cell (RBC) counts.
  • BETA-BLOCKERS — used to lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate, and may reduce fine motor tremor. Examples include carvedilol, metoprolol and propranolol.
  • BETA-2 AGONISTS — used to relax muscles around the airways to increase airflow and improve endurance.. Examples include salbutamol, salmeterol and terbutaline.
  • DRUGS OF ABUSE — includes opioids (morphine, heroine, codeine, oxycodone, oxymorphone), cannabinoids (THC), stimulants (amphetamine, cocaine), depressants (barbiturates, benzodiazepines) and hallucinogens (LSD, PCP).

The test panels used by individual sports authorities vary with the type of competition and drug policy. For example, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) conducts In-Competition and Out-of-Competition testing to detect banned substances in animals under the Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program. Professional animal sports programs use test panels customized to their individual anti-doping policies. For example, the US Equestrian Federation (USEF) oversees its own drug testing program, Equine Drugs and Medications Program (EDMP).

Specialty Tests

EQIAS Labs uses specialized techniques for detecting substances not readily detected through the standard testing process. The lab’s specialty tests include:

  • HEAVY METAL ANALYSIS — detects various heavy metals in equine biological samples.
  • BLOOD DOPING ANALYSIS — detects doping with Erythropoietin (EPO) and other blood doping hormones.
  • TOTAL CARBON DIOXIDE (TCO2) ANALYSIS — performed on the blood of racehorses to help prevent the use of alkalizing agents to enhance performance.
  • HAIR ANALYSIS — detects doping with various beta-2-agonists and anabolic steroids in hair samples.
  • SPLIT SAMPLE ANALYSIS (B SAMPLE ANALYSIS) — targeted confirmatory analysis by a referee laboratory.
  • BISPHOSPHONATE ANALYSIS – targeted analysis for a range of bisphosphonates including Clodronate and Tiludronate.

Please reference your individual program’s testing requirements to determine appropriate testing or contact EQIAS for consultative services.
